- 8 slices of bread (stale bread is preferred)

- Softened butter

- 1/2 cup of raisins or sultanas (optional)

- 4 cups of milk

- 1/2 cup of sugar

- 4 eggs

- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

- Ground cinnamon (for sprinkling)

- Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a baking dish.

2. Butter each slice of bread on one side, then cut them diagonally to form triangles.

3. Arrange half of the bread triangles in the greased baking dish, buttered side up. Sprinkle half of the raisins or sultanas over the bread.

4. Place the remaining bread triangles over the first layer, buttered side up. Sprinkle the rest of the raisins or sultanas over the bread.

5. Heat the milk in a saucepan until hot but not boiling. Remove from heat and set aside.

6. Whisk together the sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl until well combined.

7. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.

8. Pour the custard mixture over the bread in the baking dish, allowing it to soak into the bread.

9. Sprinkle the top with ground cinnamon.

10. Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan and pour hot water into the roasting pan to create a water bath.

11. Carefully transfer the roasting pan to the preheated oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the pudding is golden brown and set.

12. Remove the bread and butter pudding from the oven and let it cool slightly.

13. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, before serving.

14. Serve warm on its own or with a dollop of whipped cream or custard.
